Located in the eastern part of HCMC –\u00a0the most developed urban area of Vietnam, Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCM) was established in 1995 by the government to create a training center for undergraduate, postgraduate and science research, following high-quality and innovative multidisciplinary technology. VNUHCM serves as the core of the higher education system and dedicates to the needs of socio-economic developments.<\/p>\n

With the total area of 643.7 hectar built under modern university city model, VNUHCM is one of the largest educational institutions of Vietnam. The university has 36 units of training, scientific research and technology transfer, as well as 9 member units: the University of Technology, University of Science, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, International University, University of Information Technology, University of Economics and Law, An Giang University, University of Health Sciences and Institute for Environment and Resources.<\/p>\n

VNUHCM has over 90,000 full-time students with an academic team of more than 300 professors and associate professors and 1,197 doctors. As the leading higher education system of Vietnam, the training program of VNUHCM includes 147 disciplines\/groups of disciplines, ranging from technology, natural science, social sciences and humanities to economics, healthcare. It also has 123 master’s degree training majors and 83 doctoral ones.<\/p>\n

Defining vision as a top university system in Asia, VNUHCM for many consecutive years was ranked in the top 150 universities in the continent by the Quacquarelli Symonds Asia Education Organization (QS). In 2019, VNUHCM maintains its ranking in the top 701-750 by the QS UK, which evaluating over 1,000 leading universities in 82 countries.<\/p>\n

To connect and serve the community is one of VNUHCM\u2019s core values. Each year, the revenue from technology transfer and serving the community of VNUHCM reaches over VND 250 billion. Along with an international network of academic partners, leading educational institutions from Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Australia, VNUHCM actively updated the most advanced educational trends in training and research activities. This has enhanced the university position and prestige in the international academic community.<\/p>\n

History of Establishment and Development of Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCM)<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the early 1990s, when Vietnam entered the period of innovation and integration, higher education still faced many barriers. The subsidy mechanism was imprinted in every stage of management, the training program was mono-disciplinary, lacked connectivity, and did not meet practical needs. International integration was vague, the curriculum was outdated, and the facilities did not keep up with development needs. Faced with the strong desire to grow, higher education was forced to innovate comprehensively, paving the way for an advanced, modern, and deeply integrated knowledge base.<\/p>\n

Establishment Stage (1994-1995)<\/strong><\/p>\n

In response to the requirements of university education reform, the Government decided to establish VNUHCM on January 27, 1995 under Decree No. 16, marking a strategic step to build a leading training and scientific research hub in the country. VNUHCM was formed on the basis of the merger of 9 universities in Ho Chi Minh City: University of General Sciences, University of Technology, University of Education, University of Economics, University of Architecture, University of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Technical Education, University of Finance – Accounting and the Branch of the University of Law in Ho Chi Minh City. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Chi Dao, Deputy Minister of Education and Training, was assigned by the Government to concurrently hold the position of Chancellor of VNUHCM.<\/p>\n

Model Establishment Stage (1996-2000)<\/strong><\/p>\n

After its establishment, VNUHCM faced many challenges in its management model. In August 2000, the Politburo Standing Committee affirmed the important role of VNUHCM in the university education system through Notice No. 315. Implementing the direction of the Politburo Standing Committee, on February 12, 2001, Prime Minister Phan Van Khai signed a decision to reorganize VNUHCM, including 4 member units: University of Technology, University of Sciences, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Institute for Environment and Resources; at the same time, issued regulations on the organization and operation of the National University.<\/p>\n

To meet the expectations of an advanced university model, during this reconstruction period, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tan Phat, Deputy Minister of Education and Training, was appointed to the position of Chancellor with the responsibility of organizing and reorganizing VNUHCM.<\/p>\n

Development and Confirmation Stage (2001-2015)<\/strong>
\nDuring this period, VNUHCM focused on three strategic goals: 1) Building and developing a team of cadres and civil servants; 2) Accelerating the pace of basic construction; 3) Innovating programs, content, teaching and research methods.<\/p>\n

In 2007, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Thanh Binh was appointed as Chancellor of VNUHCM, continuing to assume the responsibility of organizing VNUHCM to fulfill the core role and mission, leading the innovation of the Vietnamese higher education system as expected by the Party and the State. At the same time, VNUHCM continued to build 5 strategic groups: 1) Improving the effectiveness of system-wide governance; 2) Building a university culture of VNUHCM; 3) Building training quality that meets international standards; 4) Affirm the position of a multidisciplinary and multi-field research university; 5) Develop and effectively use financial resources and facilities; in which, identify 03 breakthroughs in: system management, staff development and facility construction.<\/p>\n

International Integration Stage (2016-2020)<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2017, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Huynh Thanh Dat was appointed as Chancellor of VNUHCM.<\/p>\n

In this phase, VNUHCM aims to build an autonomous university model, associated with accountability, focusing on developing five strategic groups: 1) Improving the efficiency of operation and management of the entire system towards autonomy associated with accountability; 2) Building a financial mechanism to serve university development; 3) Improving training quality to meet social needs and international integration trends; 4) Linking scientific research with training, 5) Building a smart university urban area – science city with open space. The achievements of this period affirm that VNUHCM is a center for gathering talents, training high-quality human resources, creating important research works, pioneering innovation, and actively contributing to the country’s development and social progress.<\/p>\n

World Reaching Stage (2021-2030)<\/strong><\/p>\n

On January 14, 2021, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Hai Quan assumed the position of Chancellor of VNUHCM. From 2021, VNUHCM aims to become one of the leading higher education institutions in Asia, focusing on four key tasks: 1) Attracting, training and fostering talents; (2) Expanding interdisciplinary training and research; (3) Developing the National Innovation Center; (4) Developing sustainable financial resources.<\/p>\n

VNUHCM continues to promote international cooperation activities, proactively innovate the operating mechanisms of units towards autonomy, improve the effectiveness and efficiency of governance and deeply integrate with advanced higher education, gradually making its name boldly on the educational map of Southeast Asia and the world.<\/p>\n

After nearly three decades of development, VNUHCM has achieved many proud achievements. VNUHCM is the leading educational center, the largest in the country with more than 100,000 students, 6,000 lecturers, of which 1,600 have a doctorate degree, 360 professors and associate professors. VNUHCM is a pioneer in financial autonomy, with 7 autonomous member schools and the first Higher Education Development Fund in Vietnam. Training quality meets international standards, leading the country with 154 international accreditation programs, and pioneering the implementation of competency assessment exams. VNUHCM is also a leader in scientific research, publishing nearly 3,200 international articles, owning many inventions in biotechnology, advanced materials, and chips – semiconductors. The largest dormitory system in Southeast Asia, a modern university urban area and many community activities help create an ideal learning environment.
